A fun project for middle school students is creating shadow puppets from craft sheet metal. Shadow puppets are a traditional art form in Indonesia where they are called “Wayang Kulit”, and are used to enact plays based upon Hindu religious themes. Students can be shown slides of Indonesian Wayang Kulit, and videos of Wayan Kulit performances, so that they will understand the possibilities in this form of puppet performance. In the Balinese and Javanese versions, one man in a trance state manipulates all the puppets and the performances go on all night long to the accompaniment of hypnotic bell and gong gamelan music. In the school project the puppets are manipulated by the students in a “theater” made from a large cardboard box with a cut-out window covered by a cloth screen which is illuminated from behind by a strong light. The students duck beneath the level of the screen to manipulate the puppets, and the light throws the shadows of the puppets onto the screen.

To make shadow puppets, first draw the separate body pieces on cardboard – body and trunk, arms and hands, and legs and feet; and then cut them out. The arm and leg pieces will be fastened to the body piece with eyelets so the body, arms, and legs can be manipulated separately with thin sticks or rods. Trace around the pattern pieces onto craft metal sheets with a stylus, and cut them out. Hole punches can be used to make holes for eyes, nose, mouth and other features. Indonesian Wayang Kulit are often decorated with very ornate designs of cut-out holes. Use a hole punch on the body, arms, and legs pieces where they will be joined together with eyelets.

The body pieces can also be textured and embossed and facial and body features can be enhanced with paint to make the puppets’ appearance more pleasing, even though these details won’t be visible to the audience. Since the puppeteers can see them, it makes it easier for the students to get into the spirit of the puppet show. Hair can be fashioned from wires bent to form spirals of different sizes and lengths, and clothing can be made from craft mesh. When the ornamentation is done, the arms and legs are joined to the body with eyelets placed with an eyelet tool, loose enough so that the limbs move freely. Then cut rectangles of craft sheet metal and bend them around the thin sticks or rods to form tubes, and glue the tubes to the hands, feet, and bottom of the puppet. Other tubes of the same diameter are glued to the lower edge of the theater screen to hold the puppets in place while the puppeteers manipulate their hands and feet.

An applique is a simple figure of your design, cut, placed, and stitched onto a larger yardage surface which will be used as a chair throw, bed cover, or other household linen usage. Appliques can be made from any small pieces of fabric giving it a useful or decorative purpose. Anyone who loves fabrics finds it difficult to toss pieces of cloth into the trash container especially if it can be used in another manner. Appliques can be hand stitched or machine stitched. Traditional quilters prefer hand stitching. The reason being the quilt appears to be of better quality, measurements are more accurate, and there seems to be a better texture or tactile feel to the finished quilt.

Make an applique quilt with your own design. If you are a beginner choose a simple circular quilt design. If you prefer something more complicated you may wish to purchase an iron on applique or an applique kit. It fits the description of a beginner starting with a circular pattern. It is simple, but it gives you an opportunity to experiment with hand stitching or machine stitching. The leaves will offer other experiences. The orange is a fruit which will be simple to draw as it is a slightly irregular circle with a stem and leaves. You may use cotton fabric which appears to have a dimpled orange peel pattern or stuff the orange for a raised dimensional appearance, or apply a photo in the middle of the orange for an exclusive personal touch.

To add more interest you may wish to cut the orange into four quarters using four different fabric prints, patterns or solids and reconnect in a random order. It will still be an orange; however, there will be an interesting array of color variations within each orange. The leaves may be made from fabric, ribbon, cord, other trims or painted with textile paints. The advantage of starting with a round object is for its simplicity and for creating the overall quilt design for the final appearance of your quilting project. The advantages of making your own applique pattern design allows you the freedom to use a variety of materials or notions which will be suitable for the applique quilt design which you have created.

Are you familiar with the fancy, flowing writing used on many announcement cards, wedding invitations and other important documents? This is a specialized form of art combined with writing skills called calligraphy. Most people can learn how to do it with the proper instruction and practice. The first thing you need to do is collect the correct material. You can’t just grab a pencil and a piece of paper and hope to create beautiful and artful writing. Here is a list of what you should gather together. Most of these items can be found in your local art store or office supply store.

Pencils, erasers and a ruler are used to outline or trace what you will fill in with ink later. Once you master the art, you may be able to skip this first step, but as a beginner you will want all of the advantages you can get. The next things you need are paper, pens and ink. You need to use heavier paper than normal paper, usually the heavier the better, and it needs to be acid free. There are different types of pens, but the best ones use a flat tip instead of the more common ballpoint pens found most places. Calligraphy pens have special tips that are used to make smaller or larger lines and the tips are interchangeable depending on your application. The ink needs to be permanent ink and there are specialized inks just for this. Once you have all of your material, you are ready to get started. There are instructional books and DVDs available or you can find some fancy writing and start trying to copy it. Like most specialized skills, the more you practice the better you will get. Once you have perfected your skills, you can even start hiring your service out.

A basic candle kit can vary from supplier to supplier, but most contain enough material to produce one candle or more. The items that are generally found in a kit include fragrance, dyes, wick material, and the wax itself. Another variation might have gel instead of wax. Usually, necessary equipment isn’t provided in a kit, but more costly ones may have things like a food thermometer and pots for melting the wax. A few come with candle molds. Because wick selection is critical to the candle size, it is good to have that choice already made in a kit to prevent error on the part of a new candle maker. The instructions in a kit should inform of which wick to use for a particular candle and if more than one is required.

A more experienced chandler might speak to a supplier about the types of material and sizes of wick to purchase for a particular candle, but when first starting, it’s good to have decisions already made for you. Some selections in wicks are based on the preference of the candle maker, not just the size of the wick itself. At least with a kit, you know that the wick will do the job it is suppose to do, and you won’t make a critical mistake with that portion of the project. There will be time later to make other wick selections based on what you learn through practice.

There is a wide range in prices for candle kits based on how inclusive they are. One that has material enough for two dozen candles in the six-ounce range might cost seventy dollars. This kind of kit might include everything necessary to produce the candles except the means of heating the wax. This could be too large a kit if you haven’t decided to make more candles, or you don’t want to make that many candles at one time. You may want to get one that is less pricey. For lower priced kits, you will probably have to furnish your own equipment. Things like the thermometer and a double boiler pot might be items you already have and can use only for candle making. For around twenty-five dollars, you can get the fragrance, wax, wicks and other items in about half the quantity of the larger kit.

Actually, it does not necessarily means that card making should be done only when there are special occasions about to come like birthdays, weddings, Christmas and other exceptional events. You can give cards to anyone even when you just feel like saying thank you or sorry for a particular person. Card making should be regarded as one productive hobby anybody can do if given enough time and effort during the learning process.

There may be people out there who are wondering how they can start in card making. Well, the process is generally simple and basic. You may want to start out from a simple piece of paper. Prepare some coloured pens or crayons together with a scissor and glue. From here you can start out drawing some images which you think is related either to the recipient or to the upcoming occasion that prompted you to make a card. Then think of appropriate wordings before you write them down on your card. Wordings can be written in front of the card or after opening the cover.

That is actually the downside of the traditional card making. You cannot easily revise the process and if you managed to do it, the outcome will not be polished and will just leave you a feeling of disappointment. Therefore, a mock up card is the best thing to do before you cut and paste your materials to finish a personalized card. If you are the type of person who often change minds and decisions, you might as well remember the word mock up before you plunge in the art of card making. It will not only save your money but most of all your efforts and energy.

There are lots of reasons why customers are choosing to buy handmade, but the best reasons to buy handmade are these:

1. Buying handmade supports traditional arts. Throughout history artisans and crafters have developed methods and techniques to make items that are useful for everyday living beautiful and unique. Buying handmade supports the continuance of those arts. Without a market for handmade goods some artistic techniques that have been around for thousands of years might die out.

2. Buying handmade means buying one of a kind. In today’s culture that has a relentless focus on uniformity buying handmade items helps you stand out from the pack and express your unique personality with one of a kind pieces of art and clothing. If you are comfortable with who you are and like being different from everyone else than buying handmade one of a kind items is definitely for you.

3. Buying handmade means buying higher quality. If you buy handmade items from a highly skilled artisan or high end crafter the item that you buy will almost always be of much higher quality than something you can get at the local discount store that was mass produced. Handmade items are made with high end materials and carefully crafted so that they will last and stay beautiful for a long time.

4. Buying handmade supports small businesses. Since most artisans and crafters use unique or not mass produced materials that are made by another artisan or crafter when you buy handmade products you’re not only giving money to the artist but also to all the other artists that create the supplies to make that product. Paying more for a handmade item is really an investment because you are helping to support several artists.

5. Buying handmade makes a statement. Making a conscious choice to buy handmade products instead of mass produced ones says that things like quality, craftsmanship, and supporting small businesses instead of big retail businesses matters to you. When you buy handmade you are using your dollars to tell stores like Wal Mart that not every consumer can be seduced by the lowest price.

Shop handmade online, it’s easier! Buying handmade online is the most popular way to shop handmade. HandmadeShoppingDirectory.com – Top site for 1000’s of Fabulous Handmade & Arts & Crafts, shops & stores. HandmadeShoppingDirectory.com helps you to drive high quality traffic to your business, not just traffic but serious shoppers and buyers who are looking for products and ready to make a purchase!

Applique work is a technique by which patches of colored fabric cut in various motifs and sizes are superposed on a basic fabric to obtain a decorative whole, with edges of adjacent patches sewn together in some form of stitchery. Color palette for traditional applique items is very basic – red, white, black and yellow fabrics are used to form a vibrant collage, with black preferably forming the base. Glass pieces, metal wires and beads are used for further embellishment. Nowadays, Pipli craftsmen and manufacturers are experimenting with other colors as well to enliven the craft even more.

Today, applique finds expressions in a wide variety of home decor items. From wall-hangings and awnings to Kundini-worked decorative pieces, the range of appliq items available nowadays is pretty exhaustive. One can even choose from a variety of mirror-worked appliqué dresses and skirts for a perfect evening do. Nothing can match the vibrancy of a applique worked handbag on a private function with sequins sewn on it. Appliqué bags and jholas are also becoming quite a rage these days on campuses.

The choice of applique items of Pipli origin for a prospective buyer does not end here. Manufacturers in Pipli and Puri are nowadays flooded with offers from star-rated hotels and resorts to supply applique made side walls and garden umbrellas. Upcoming designers are also considering it a new way to express their creative visions. Accordingly, the fabric used for this typical patchwork has undergone a refreshing change. It is no more the same thick cotton base that is used to elaborate a certain theme; now experimentation is done with fabrics as varied as velvet, satin and Georgette.

Popularity of applique items of Pipli is clearly on the rise. Rathayatra or no Rathayatra- applique saleables of Pipli are now regarded as a major crowd-puller in Puri. Tourists thronging this beach city from all over India and the world find applique art absolutely entrancing, and they make it point to buy a thing or two of this amazing work of art to add a dash of color either to their wardrobe or to a dull nook back at home. This has been augmenting the demand for applique items of Pipli to a large scale over the years. Applique work of Pipli is now a much sought after art of embroidery. Decorative items made of it are colorful, yet not jazzy. They help make a statement when put up at the right place or accessorized properly. The most interesting fact about applique items of Pipli are, unlike many other decorative artifacts of daily use, they are not overtly expensive.

Unfortunately, however, many of these organizations levy exorbitantly high upfront fees without any guarantee that a deal will even be closed with an angel investor.
To start with, you may want to consider your regional business angel investment network if one exists. The upside of these networks is that they oftentimes comprise of business people with a good deal of expertise in business and investing. Further deals are frequently syndicated between several investors, which can frequently make the management of your investors’ expectations rather challenging.
